Auto Accident Statistics for Alabama
The Alabama Department of Public Safety maintains a comprehensive list of auto accident statistics from the years 1971 to 2003. The report is broken down into injury-type, property-type, fatality-type, persons killed and persons injured for both rural and urban areas. Combining all of these accidents together, the results are quite alarming:
- 1971: 88,019 total accidents (rural and urban)
- 2003: 141,029 total accidents (rural and urban)
While the total number of accidents increased over the years, the good news is that the number of fatalities in Alabama actually decreased, due in part to improved safety features in cars as well as improved auto laws, such as drunk driving and seat belt laws.
- 1971: 1,251 total fatalities (rural and urban)
- 2003: 1,001 total fatalities (rural and urban)
The Alabama Department of Public Safety also includes very detailed annual accident summary reports for the years 2005-2007 on its website. These reports show breakdowns of all different types of accidents and illustrate the many different factors surrounding auto accidents, such as:
- times of day accidents occur
- ages of people involved
- alcohol involvement
- weather conditions
- light conditions
- geographical locales
- vehicles by type
- road surface condition
These reports show that the number of types of motor vehicle accidents may actually be dropping slightly, while the number of fatalities is staying relatively constant.
- 2005: 143,948 accidents / 1,013 fatalities
- 2006: 139,742 accidents / 1,074 fatalities
- 2007: 135,227 accidents / 1,010 fatalities
We like to believe that all motorists are responsible and have auto insurance. With an insurance company that is focused on getting fair compensation for everyone involved. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Many insurance companies have lawyers whose main goal is to settle claims for the least amount possible this is called bad faith insurance.
Don't delay. Legal action may be the only way to receive compensation for which you are entitled, such as lost or diminished wages, medical bills, compensation to the surviving family in case of death. If you don't file a suit within the time period allotted by law, you may lose the right to file the claim.
